"Look at this! It's a fortune from that place- you know, the one where the fortunes in the cookies really happen. It says that my lucky animal is a wolf, and my lucky number is two! I'll be super-lucky if I stay by you today!"
If Manami would hold still long enough, the paper actually reads:
"The wolf is not always the foe. Much can be learned as his ally. Lucky numbers: 2, 6, 16, 22, 30"
Manami's caught Arakita on his way to the clubhouse, shoulders hunched forward and looking distinctly like he doesn't want to have anything to do with anyone; actually, Manami always catches him when he doesn't want anything to do with anyone, who is he kidding.
A look over his shoulder, like he doesn't understand why he's being bothered about fortunes and cookies and wolves— does Manami even know that he's supposed to be cleaning the clubroom today? Probably not. Lord save them all.
"Hahh?! When the hell did you have time to go to that Chinese joint, anyway?"
When does Arakita ever look like he wants anything to do with anyone?
And someone will remind him that it's his turn! Someone always does- (unfortunately?)
Arakita does ask the good questions though! Without letting go Manami answers while walking with him,
"During fifth period, I think. I kinda missed gym then math then lunch, so I figured I might just as well have lunch there as anywhere! Heh heh, pretty sure I'll hear about missing three periods today from Class-Rep... but can't be helped, right? When you're hungry you gotta eat!"
"Hahh, I'm surprised you made it all the way to high school, Fushigi-chan."
He delivers this in a complete deadpan, because as much as he'd like to be surprised, he's pretty sure that Manami is able to do things because He Just Can. It's a climbers thing, probably. Questioning it is only going to give him premature grays.
A snort and Arakita rounds the corner of the hall, towards the stairs.
"What the hell is all this about you needing to stick by me, though? Pass."
A foot stops, poised halfway down a step. Arakita's head whirls, stops with his chin slightly elevated in appraisal and unconcealed ire— when doesn't he look pissed off is the real question, but this expression comes with slight surprise. It's always slightly disarming when Manami manages to be sharp in weird contexts.
Or calls him out on things, tch.
"...Always true my ass. What, do you go for superstitious crap like that?"
No comment about the unlucky thing, because God help Manami if he fucks this up for Fuku-chan.
Manami halts awkwardly on the step below Arakita when he suddenly stops. Good thing they weren't going faster or he might have pulled you down!
Superstitious crap? Nope, he doesn't really take it seriously. Only when it's fun~! So he nods.
"They have a pretty good record! Everyone in 1-A was talking about it. And they heard it from 1-B. The girls can't stop talking about how everything came true! So I really think I'll be lucky if I stick with you!"

Color Arakita surprised again: Manami actually paying attention to gossip? Manami caring about something other than mountains? Call the press, this is one story they wouldn't want to miss out on.
Sharp, narrowed eyes move up and down the length of his junior, reaffirming that yes, this is Manami Sangaku he's talking to. He needs to be certain.
"That's because they make those fortunes vague enough that they might come true, moron. Stuff like 'beware of unexpected visitors'."
Does he speak from experience? Very likely, considering that he has two younger sisters. A snort, and he starts walking again.
He only remembered it because it might help him troll have fun with someone! And, well, getting a fortune like this, it really was lucky, wasn't it? Of course it was!
So he takes the probing look in stride. But Arakita-san, trying so hard to shut him down- it really is just like in the fortune! So foe-like~ hehe.
"Mmm? You think it's vague?" Still clinging to one arm, he holds up the tiny paper to read it again with his other hand. "I think it talks exactly about you! And what if Fukutomi-san puts us together for practice today? That pretty much never happens, right? So that would be super-lucky!"
If Manami expected easy relinquishment from Arakita, he's in for a world of disappointment. Hakone's 'wolf' keeps trotting along, hands shoved in his pants pocket, maintaining eye contact with inanimate objects instead of the kid latched onto him like a giant blue barnacle.
"What does the fortune actually say. 'Go to the zoo, you'll be lucky if you see 2 wolves'?"
